Welcome to Chris Carter 2008
Greetings Friends!

I’m excited to introduce myself as the Democratic candidate for State Representative of the 61st District. You may already be familiar with my background, both through my personal efforts and my family’s. My grandmother, the late Senator Paula J. Carter, was a committed public servant for many years. My uncle, Alderman Gregory J. Carter of the 27th Ward, has similarly worked tirelessly for our neighborhoods through his own elected office. I look forward to following in their footsteps and carrying on our family’s legacy of hard work, dedication, and public service for our community.

Except for my college years, I’ve lived my entire life in the 61st District. From St. Matthews Elementary to Cardinal Ritter High School, I have been educated in our district. I grew up in the 2nd Ward and currently reside in the 27th Ward. I believe this lifetime commitment and understanding of our community makes me an excellent choice for this office. Indeed, your experiences and concerns are the same as my own.

When I ask people what they want from their state government, the answers are always similar. We need affordable housing and decent paying jobs. We deserve access to health care and a quality education for our children. We need someone who will stand up for us against crime and all of its consequences upon our neighborhoods. These core issues, those of my friends and neighbors, are what I hold in my heart and on my agenda.

In addition to politics, I’ve served our community in a number of official positions and capacities. I’ve worked as the Director of Community Affairs for the 61st District, District Assistant to Senator Jeff Smith and as an organizer for the city’s Democratic Party. I’m a member of Young Democrats, NAACP, NSBE, St. Louis C.A.N., NCCJ and the Paula J. Carter Foundation. Also, I serve as a mentor for Big Brothers Big Sisters and am a proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc.

I’ve learned a number of core lessons from these experiences. I know passivism doesn’t help the people of our community, action does. I appreciate that real leadership is a requirement for actual change. I recognize that policy lies at the heart of transformation and that a community’s people and positions guide its basic conditions. We need leaders that will work to craft quality, effective legislation; not just vote.

When elected, I’ll bring all of these talents and skills to the job. My candidacy is rooted in a family tradition of public service, passionate about the issues affecting Missourians, prepared for the challenges of leadership and full of desire to create policies that will better the lives of every man, woman and child in our state. I will be contacting you in the upcoming days to discuss my campaign. I look forward to earning your support.

Sincerely,

Chris Carter
